Best metal credit cards in Canada

A metal card is a heavier, premium-feeling card — and in Canada that almost always means a premium travel or rewards card. The metal itself is cosmetic; what matters is the rewards and perks that come with it. Here are the Canadian cards whose metal body we could verify.

Metal cards are a status signal more than a feature — the body doesn’t change your earn rate. In Canada the metal cards are concentrated among the American Express charge cards and the Visa Infinite Privilege tier, with a couple of outliers. We only list cards whose metal construction is confirmed by the issuer or multiple reputable sources.

Two honest caveats: the Amex metal cards have a metal face with a plastic back (not solid metal), and the KOHO Metal card is a prepaid card, not a credit card — so it won’t build credit. Several premium cards people assume are metal (the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege) could not be confirmed and are left off.

A metal body is cosmetic — it doesn’t improve the rewards. We list only cards whose metal construction we could verify; cards we couldn’t confirm (e.g. CIBC Aeroplan VIP, RBC Avion VIP, Neo, Brim) are excluded. Note the Amex metal cards are metal-faced with a plastic back, and KOHO Metal is a prepaid card, not credit.

Frequently asked questions

Which credit cards are metal in Canada?

The confirmed metal cards include the American Express Platinum, Aeroplan Reserve and Gold Rewards; the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege; the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege; the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege; and the Wealthsimple Credit Card (metal tier). KOHO Metal is also metal but is a prepaid card, not credit.

Does a metal credit card have better rewards?

No — the metal body is purely cosmetic and doesn’t change the earn rate or benefits. Metal cards tend to be premium travel cards, so they often carry rich rewards and perks, but that comes from the card’s program, not the metal. Choose on the rewards and fee, not the material.

Are Canadian Amex cards solid metal?

Not entirely — the current contactless Amex metal cards (Platinum, Gold, Aeroplan Reserve) have a metal face with a plastic back, rather than being solid metal. They’re still noticeably heavier than a standard plastic card, but it’s worth knowing if solid metal is what you’re picturing.

Is there a no-fee metal credit card in Canada?

The closest is the Wealthsimple Credit Card, which is metal and has no annual fee if you hold $100,000+ in Wealthsimple assets (otherwise about $20/month). KOHO Metal has no credit check but is a prepaid card with a monthly plan fee, not a true credit card.
