Wealthsimple Tax review

4.7/5

The best free tax software in Canada for most people. Pay-what-you-want means you can file a complete personal return — investments, capital gains, rental, self-employment — for $0, and it is CRA-certified, not a stripped-down "free tier".

Best for: Most Canadians filing a personal return — including investors and the self-employed — who want a free, CRA-certified tool.

Pros

  • Genuinely free for a full personal return, even with investment or self-employment income
  • Auto-fill My Return pulls your slips straight from the CRA
  • Optimizer sweeps 400+ credits and suggests where to place RRSP and donations
  • Files the Quebec TP-1
  • Refunds can flow straight into a Wealthsimple account

Cons

  • Personal T1 only — no corporate T2 returns
  • Web-only; the old mobile filing app is gone
  • The Pro expert consult is not offered in Quebec or in French

What Wealthsimple Tax is

Wealthsimple Tax is the former SimpleTax, acquired by Wealthsimple and folded into its app. It is a pay-what-you-want product: at the end of the return it asks what you would like to pay, and $0 is a valid answer. Unlike the "free tiers" at TurboTax and H&R Block, that free path is not restricted to simple returns — it handles investment income, capital gains, rental and self-employment (the T2125) all the same.

It is certified by the CRA for NETFILE and by Revenu Québec for the TP-1, so a $0 return here is filed exactly the same way as a paid one anywhere else.

Pricing and the paid tiers

Most people pay nothing. The two paid tiers add services rather than unlock your return: Plus (about $40) bundles audit protection and priority support across up to 8 returns, and Pro (about $80) adds a one-on-one consultation with a tax expert. The Pro consult is English-only and not available in Quebec.

There is no corporate (T2) option — incorporated business owners need different software. For everyone filing a personal return, run the refund math first with our income tax calculator and, if you have gains, the capital gains calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Wealthsimple Tax cost?
Free to file — pay what you want, starting at $0. The Basic tier files a full personal return — including investments, capital gains, rental and self-employment (T2125) — for $0 if you choose to pay nothing. Prices verified at Wealthsimple Tax's own site on June 13, 2026 — they change through the tax season, so confirm before you buy. Compare the field on our best tax software ranking.
Is Wealthsimple Tax certified by the CRA (NETFILE)?
Yes — Wealthsimple Tax carries explicit CRA NETFILE certification for the 2025 tax year. NETFILE caps any single product at 20 returns per year.
Can Wealthsimple Tax file a Quebec return?
Files the Quebec TP-1; the Pro expert consult is not offered in Quebec or in French. Quebec residents file a separate TP-1 return on top of the federal one — see which tools handle it best in our three-way comparison.

The bottom line

If you file a personal return — even a complex one with investments or self-employment — Wealthsimple Tax is the one to beat. It is free, certified and genuinely capable. The only reasons to look elsewhere: you want heavy hand-holding (TurboTax), an in-person office (H&R Block), or you run an incorporated business (neither applies — you need T2 software).
